We often change the stain color on doors. First we remove the clear coating, which is usually a lacuer or varnish. Second we use a stripper or sand off the stain color. Third we apply a wood conditioner and allow to dry. One to three stain coats to achieve the desired color; then apply clear coatings for protection.
